Kings to Standards

Kings to Standards

Have you been this way, Kings to Standards on a windy day?
Disappointingly the ripples hide the fish,
but on hot days there they are;
my float undulating, the fish facing the other way.

And in that childhood on that water the world passed by
Happily leaving me, the fish, the birds and the eels
In that box of infancy to read the letters in the reeds,
And make those words soften later years
As the landscape, essential remains, where my ancestors lie.
